TENSION • Pericolo Di Morte 7"

Tantrum Records 1985
This is the third installment in my 4 part series of Buffalo reviews, and after all the macho NYHC posturing of ZERO TOLERANCE and SNAPCASE (demo coming next), this is a refreshing change. TENSION were a mystery to me when I was a kid cuz they were 3 parts from Buffalo, NY and 1 part from St. Catharines, ON (the crappy little Canadian town I grew up in). "What? A real live hardcore band from St. Catharines?" No one could believe it, and no one (I knew) knew the guy in the band... but whatever, he was from St. Catharines so we all bought the 7". Can't say that I loved this 7" either, but it was still cool cuz of the connection. TENSION play what I'd describe as European style 80's hardcore: ultra fast thrash with buzzsaw guitars, rife with poltical lyrics, and social commentary. The songs aren't mindblowing by any means, but the band is tight and furiously passionate. It's taken 23 years, but this one is starting to grow on me.

Thanks for the review. Sorry we did not meet in St. Catharines. I made the move to Buffalo in '83 since there was not much of a scene other than the die-hards at Jerry's Alley.

This is a fucking great record. Too bad I was only 3 when this record came out. Do you have any more info on this band or any Buffalo contemporaries from that same time period?

Sorry, but I know very little about the band. Perhaps if Tymn makes a return visit he'd be willing to share some background info.

Yeah, it'd be awesome to get a little more information on the band. TENSION are pretty much the closest thing Buffalo (and I'm sure St. Catharines, for that matter) can claim to a first wave hardcore band.

I also heard a rumor that Chris Manfrey who played drums and bass on the first Against All Hope 7", played w/ Tension for a little while. Maybe Tymn Tension can confirm or dis-confirm that rumor. Here's to hoping he makes a return!

back
I recently saw Tony, the original drummer, out in Santa Monica. He is back drumming with Green Jello for fun, Bill Manspeaker moved the project to Hollywood some years back.

Chris was a drummer for a while after Tony went out west.

Luke the original guitar player married a model and is living near the border of France and Italy.

We formed in 1983 in Buffalo NY. Our home base for a while was the Cabaret 650 on Main Street. The original line up, which recorded the 7 inch in 1985 stayed together until after er rather during the Euro tour of 1985.

this lead to the departure of Luke and Tony and the inclusion of Frank (icanreadbooks) on guitar and Chris on drums.

There was a guitar player Ron Fector, I think, that found god while playing with us. He didn't last...

there's more but I'll stop for now..

I found this page looking for info on this band. I've had this 7" for years, not selling, but I just scored a copy to sell. No idea of it's worth... anybody know what that previous one sold for? Mine is available but failing any other way to pass it along it may go on eBay soon. I can be reached at shakesome@aol.com.

Apparently it's worth some good money:

There's a demo too. Pretty sure it's the same as the ep, just came out a tad bit little earlier. Mine didn't come with a jcard but there's an info/photo/lyric insert with it. Don't have it in front of me or I'd confirm the date and al that. Never had the 7" and it rarely surfaces.
